The number of new passenger cars in Switzerland fell slightly in November. Sales initiatives and campaigns by dealers prevented larger losses.

As a result, 19,615 new cars were registered in November, as reported by the import association Auto Schweiz on Monday. Thanks to the great sales efforts of importers and dealers, who tried to turn around another bad year with campaigns, this only resulted in a moderate decline of 0.4 percent compared to the same month last year.

However, the 3.4% decline in the market as a whole since the beginning of the year shows no sign of recovery.

Sales of e-cars are not gaining momentum

In November, all-electric vehicles (BEV) achieved a market share of 24.3% and plug-in hybrids 11.5%, giving them a combined share of 35.8%. Cumulatively since the beginning of the year, however, these vehicles still only account for just under a third of all new cars sold, with a share of 32.8%.

According to Auto Schweiz, the moderate growth of recent months cannot hide the fact that the political goal of the electric mobility roadmap of 50 percent plug-in vehicles remains an unfulfilled Christmas wish.

Missing the target will therefore result in sanctions for the Swiss economy in the three-digit million range for 2025. The spark of e-mobility has apparently still not spread to consumers, which the association attributes to high electricity prices, insufficient charging infrastructure and a lack of market-based incentives.
