The USA is exempting smartphones and computers from President Donald Trump's controversial tariff hikes, marking a further retreat in its trade policy. The withdrawal of additional tariffs also affects imports of electronic goods from China.

This emerged from a document published by the US Customs and Border Protection Agency. Semiconductors are also exempt from the massive tariff increases.

The Trump administration is apparently responding to fears that the new tariffs could make smartphones, computers and other electronic devices significantly more expensive for US consumers.

Trump recently massively increased tariffs on foreign imports in two stages: he initially introduced a basic minimum tariff of ten percent.

For around 60 trading partners - including Switzerland - he imposed surcharges, some of which were significantly higher. Swiss export goods were to be subject to tariffs of 31%. Tariffs of 20 percent were planned for the EU.

However, a few hours after these higher tariffs came into force last Wednesday, the US President backtracked and announced a "pause" for 90 days. However, Trump had not withdrawn these tariffs for China. US tariffs on Chinese imports recently amounted to 145 percent.
