Proof of age can be provided with an Australian bank account or ID. The background to this is a social media ban for children and young people in Australia that comes into force on December 10. Companies could face a fine of up to 49.5 million Australian dollars (around 25.8 million Swiss francs) if they violate the law. However, it is still unclear how the implementation of the legal requirements will be monitored.
Australia is thus a global pioneer. Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and YouTube are also affected. The messenger services Whatsapp and Discord and the gaming platform Roblox have so far been exempt, while the streaming service Twitch is still under review.
Snapchat allows users to send private photos and videos back and forth and follow public profiles.
