A snowboarder was swept away by an avalanche in the Lötschental on Sunday. The injured 50-year-old Swiss man was flown by helicopter to Visp Hospital and then to Sion Hospital.

The avalanche broke loose shortly after 12 noon at an altitude of around 2,400 meters in the municipality of Kippel VS, according to the Valais cantonal police on Sunday evening. The snowboarder and a skier were on the eastern flank of the "Hockuchriz" in the direction of "Schreja" at the time. The snowboarder was swept away by the avalanche.
According to the police, the skier was able to get to safety on his own. The buried snowboarder was rescued by his colleague and the emergency services of the Valais cantonal rescue organization with the support of three helicopters.
