Torrential rains have caused devastating floods in the south of Thailand. According to disaster control, ten provinces are affected, including Songkhla province on the border with Malaysia.

The local governor declared the entire administrative district a disaster area and ordered the evacuation of the population. According to the authorities, at least 13 people have already lost their lives.

In addition to numerous emergency services, the military also tried to rescue people trapped by the masses of water. The Bangkok Post newspaper reported desperate cries for help from many citizens. However, the rescue work is proving difficult because most residents can only be reached by boat. Many people are already running out of food, it said.

Two million people affected

This was preceded by record monsoon rains. According to the local government, around 465,000 people in 16 districts in Songkhla alone have been affected by the flooding - more than half of them in Hat Yai, the largest city in southern Thailand. In total, the disaster control authorities are already talking about more than two million residents who have been suffering from the flooding that has been going on for days. The rainfall is only expected to subside somewhat over the next few days.

The Thai navy has announced that it will deploy the aircraft carrier HTMS Chakri Naruebet, among others - with two helicopters, emergency personnel, medical teams, a field kitchen, rescue equipment, food and drinking water on board. If necessary, up to 3,000 meals a day can be produced on the ship. There was also severe flooding in neighboring Malaysia. More than 10,000 people are on the run.
