The Basel parliamentary groups SP and GAB are calling for a parliamentary commission of inquiry (PUK) to investigate the negative mood in the Basel police force. This was announced by the parliamentary group spokespersons on Wednesday during the debate on the annual accounts.

An external report published on Friday by Basel constitutional law expert Markus Schefer revealed great dissatisfaction among the employees of the Basel-Stadt cantonal police force. In a survey, they cited a "culture of fear" and a lack of trust in the management, among other things.
Spokespersons for the SP and the GAB described it as an alarming sign that 153 positions in the Justice and Security Department were not filled - 120 of them in the police force. Despite this, the budget for personnel costs had been exceeded by 3 percent. This situation, which GAB spokesperson Nicola Goepfert described as "desolate", needs to be addressed politically.
