The Spanish city of Avila, famous for its fortifications, is partially under water. Mayor Jesús Manuel Sánchez Cabrera explained on television on Saturday that a state of alert and emergency was in force in the city, which is located around one hundred kilometers from Madrid.

Images showed that several districts and agricultural areas around the city were flooded. The flooding was caused by weeks of rainfall, which caused the Adaja River to burst its banks. The authorities fear that the melting snow in the surrounding mountains will make the flooding even worse. A "large amount of snow has accumulated" on the peaks, the mayor warned.
