The entire technology, ventilation, electricity, water, sanitation and roofs will be affected, as announced by the Ministry of Science in Stuttgart. During the renovation phase, the works of art from the 20th and 21st century collection will be exhibited in the art building on Schlossplatz as an interim space. The art building was extensively renovated between 2021 and 2024.
When it opened in 1984, the Stirling building was both praised and reviled as a "worldwide attraction" and was described as a "grandiose joke in reinforced concrete and travertine". Today, the museum designed by British architect James Stirling (1924-1992) is considered one of the most important buildings of German postmodernism. Works of classical and new modernism can be seen in the rooms.
In Germany, numerous renovations of cultural buildings have been making headlines for years due to budget increases and construction delays. The best-known examples are the Pergamon Museum in Berlin and the Cologne theaters.
