The Seattle-based company announced on Monday that 60 percent of a new joint venture, which will operate around 8,000 Starbucks cafés in China, will go to Boyu Capital. Starbucks will hold the remaining 40 percent as well as the brand rights.
Starbucks has been present in China for 26 years and the country is now the second most important market behind the USA. Recently, however, local competitors such as Luckin have increasingly challenged Starbucks for market share by offering lower prices.
Boyu Capital is now to help Starbucks expand into smaller cities and new regions in China. The number of locations is set to rise to 20,000.
