The main earthquake expected by many seismologists in the area of the volcanic island of Santorini has not yet occurred, but is feared. The Ministry of Civil Protection has therefore declared a state of emergency for the Greek island.

This means that over the next 30 days, the authorities can, among other things, require the owners of heavy equipment and other people to work unbureaucratically on evacuation measures and other work. The island municipality published the relevant document from the ministry on the internet.

Meanwhile, the Greek Earthquake Protection Authority once again announced that an earthquake of magnitude 6 or more could still not be ruled out. Damage of this magnitude is to be feared. On Thursday alone, dozens of tremors occurred in the Santorini area, causing fear among the population. The Greek military is to set up field kitchens on Friday so that citizens and rescue workers can be supplied with food in an emergency, as the news channel Skai reported.

The majority of residents have left the island for the mainland in recent days for fear of a natural disaster, including women, children and elderly people in particular. Those who are holding out are also doing so to protect their belongings - they fear that looting could occur on the empty island. Younger residents and the police are therefore patrolling the narrow streets of the villages, as shown by Greek TV stations.
