Storm "Alfred" has reached the east coast of Australia. As a tropical depression, it made landfall on Saturday evening (local time) around 50 kilometers northeast of the metropolis of Brisbane, according to the national weather service. "Alfred" had been heading towards Australia's east coast as a cyclone and was downgraded to a tropical depression on Saturday morning.

Photos and videos in Australian media showed uprooted trees and toppled electricity pylons. The first foothills of the cyclone had already covered the coast with heavy continuous rain, causing rivers to burst their banks and entire streets to be flooded. Thousands of people were asked by the authorities to leave the affected areas as a precaution. On Saturday, rescue workers recovered the body of a man from the floods.

According to the weather service, the storm is moving further inland towards the southwest. Heavy rain is forecast for the states of Queensland and New South Wales over the weekend. The weather service warned of "life-threatening" flash floods.
