One of the most severe storms in years

According to the authorities, the current bad weather situation is one of the most intense in years. With regard to the storm, the civil defense warns of a "critical phase" that is likely to weaken only slowly. According to the weather office, winds of force nine (speeds of up to 88 kilometers per hour) are prevailing in places in the Aegean. Schools remain closed in nine of Greece's 13 regions. Those who can should work from home, the government said.

Fire department in continuous operation

The fire department reported dozens of call-outs due to flooded buildings and fallen objects. Some roads turned into raging torrents that swept cars away. The east-west highway connecting Athens with the western Greek port of Patras had to be temporarily closed. Flooding was also reported in the Sparta region on the Peloponnese peninsula.

Warning: avoid unnecessary journeys

The authorities urged the population to avoid unnecessary journeys. People were asked to avoid flooded underpasses, steeply sloping roads and places that crossed rivers by text message warning from the civil defense. The weather is expected to improve on Saturday, according to meteorologists.
