Storm "Therese" has caused considerable damage on the Canary Islands, which are popular with tourists, with gale-force winds, heavy rain and huge waves. Spanish media reported flooding in low-lying areas, uprooted trees, landslides and battered promenades. In some places, twice the average rainfall of an entire year was measured within a few days. Fortunately, there were no casualties according to reports.
The authorities had been warning the population of the islands off the west coast of North Africa about the storm since Wednesday and had called on them to stay at home if possible. Kindergartens and schools were closed, festivals and all large gatherings outdoors and indoors were canceled.
Despite the consequences of the storm, many people were also reported to be happy about the now well-filled reservoirs. In the town of San Nicolás on Gran Canaria, the church bells even rang because three large reservoirs in the region were so full that they were overflowing. According to the newspaper "Canarias7", this will ensure agricultural irrigation on the otherwise drought-stricken islands for several years to come.
The storm was expected to slowly subside over the course of Sunday.
