  • Severe thunderstorms have swept across parts of Germany.
  • In Bavaria, thunderstorms with hail and heavy rain caused severe damage on Friday evening.
  • A storm also hit parts of Baden-Württemberg.

Flooded roads, a suspected tornado and a wintry sight in Bavaria: severe thunderstorms swept across parts of Germany. In southern Bavaria, for example, thunderstorms with hail and heavy rain on Friday evening caused flooded cellars, flooded roads and traffic disruptions. In Swabia, roads were partially covered in white with hailstones.

In Baden-Württemberg, the fire department and police were also called out due to flooded roads, accidents and lightning strikes. According to the police, several people were injured. In Ostelsheim in the district of Calw, for example, an eight-year-old boy was hit by a falling tree on Friday afternoon. It was initially unclear how seriously the child was injured. In Emmendingen, a lightning strike caused a roof fire in an apartment building late on Friday evening. The police estimated the damage at around 500,000 euros. The nine residents of the house were unharmed.

Suspected tornado in NRW

A storm also hit the town of Telgte near Münster in North Rhine-Westphalia. The German Weather Service (DWD) is now investigating whether it was a tornado. This was announced by the DWD in response to an inquiry this morning. The storm had caused severe damage to buildings in an industrial estate on Friday and swept away large construction containers.

In northern Germany, emergency services in Lower Saxony in particular had to contend with the storm. They had a lot to do in the district of Grafschaft Bentheim in particular. In Nordhorn, the emergency services were called out to more than 100 incidents until late into the night, according to the fire department. In one clinic, so much water penetrated that the emergency room had to close at short notice.

Countless flashes of lightning in Austria

In Austria, the weather service UBIMET registered 190,000 lightning discharges on Friday - the highest figure this year. In southern Carinthia, emergency services were deployed to several lakes to rescue swimmers, stand-up paddlers and surfers who were unable to reach the shore due to the strong waves. Around 40 flights were canceled at Vienna Airport on Friday evening due to the weather conditions.

It could get uncomfortable again in the new week: On Monday, a new area of low pressure over France will bring increasing showers and thunderstorms from the west and southwest. During the night, these will spread eastwards and north-eastwards.
