Journalism is undergoing a fundamental transformation process. This is largely driven by digitalization. In order to protect the media from a loss of relevance and credibility, the industry is relying on greater media literacy.

This is the conclusion drawn by the Federal Media Commission (Emek) from industry discussions, as announced on Monday. The challenges posed by digitalization and artificial intelligence are major and need to be discussed publicly.

According to the Emek, the media view artificial intelligence in different ways: on the one hand, it helps to optimize output, increase efficiency and personalize distribution. On the other hand, journalistic empathy is gaining in importance.

The industry was divided on the issue of a loss of relevance. Some see a loss of trust due to disinformation and are gloomy about the future in view of the financial pressure. Others say that "traditional media" enjoy trust, especially in times of great uncertainty.
