A magnitude 7.5 earthquake has shaken Japan. The Japanese Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning and warned of waves that could be up to three meters high. Shortly afterwards, tidal waves of up to 80 centimetres were reported on the coast of the north-eastern prefecture of Iwate, according to Japanese TV station NHK.
No irregularities were detected at the Fukushima Daichi nuclear ruins or at the nuclear power plants in the prefectures of Miyagi and Aomori, the Japanese news agency Kyodo reported, citing the operators.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called on people in the affected areas to move to higher ground immediately. The earthquake center was located in the sea at a depth of around 35 kilometers, on the east coast of Japan. There were initially no reports of damage or casualties.
