This was a year-on-year profit increase of almost 16 percent. Quarterly turnover also rose by around 16 percent to 143.8 billion dollars.

The iPhone business jumped by 23 percent year-on-year to a record figure of around 85.3 billion dollars. The Group has not been disclosing unit sales figures for some time now. According to calculations by market researchers, Apple toppled the long-time smartphone market leader Samsung from its throne last year with the iPhone.

The figures exceeded analysts' expectations. Business in China also regained momentum after a period of weakness. The share price rose by two percent at times in US after-hours trading.
