Sun and avalanche danger
According to SRF Meteo, a high-pressure system will dominate the weather in Switzerland today (Thursday) and on Friday. There will be high fog in the lowlands, but sunshine in the Alps. The avalanche danger is classified as considerable to high.
Avalanche danger on Thursday. Picture: SRF Meteo/SLFHowever, the fine weather will not last. The next disturbance will move in on Saturday night. According to MeteoSwiss, increasingly high and medium-high cloud fields are expected to move across Switzerland from the west as early as Friday afternoon. Precipitation will then fall from the northwest during the night to Saturday. The snow line will be between 1400 and 1600 meters.

Confederation warns of snowfall - high avalanche risk
The federal government has issued a warning for snowfall above 800 meters. The warning is valid until 6 p.m. on Wednesday evening and applies to the central and eastern northern slopes of the Alps as well as the Prättigau region. Between 15 and 30 centimetres of fresh snow are expected.
The federal snow warning applies in the yellow-colored regions. MeteoSchweizThere is also a high avalanche risk on the northern Alpine ridge from Les Diableret to Titlis. The avalanche warning service forecast a danger level 4 for these areas on Wednesday.
According to the snow map of the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF, up to one meter of fresh snow has fallen in these areas in the last 72 hours. According to the avalanche bulletin, the north wind has caused drifting snow to accumulate and this, together with the fresh snow, is covering a weak layer of old snow.

This week brings snow, rain and wind - avalanche danger rises to level 4
A strong area of low pressure will move across Central Europe from the British Isles from Sunday evening and will bring changeable weather with wind, rain and snow until at least Wednesday. The precipitation will be particularly heavy in the Alps.
According to the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF), more than one meter of fresh snow is expected in some areas above around 1400 meters between Sunday evening and Tuesday evening. The avalanche risk will increase accordingly: Danger level four is expected in western Valais and along the northern Alpine ridge. More spontaneous avalanches are possible - occasionally very large ones that could endanger traffic routes.
In the lowlands, however, it will remain too mild for snow. The snow line will rise rapidly to 1100 to 1500 meters during the night to Monday and will only fall back to around 500 meters by midweek. However, the precipitation will then ease.
The low pressure system will initially bring mild Atlantic air and a temporary föhn wind, before colder air from northern Europe flows in from Tuesday. High pressure is expected to prevail in the second half of the week: The sun will shine in the mountains, while the lowlands are likely to come under high fog.

MeteoSwiss expects mild winter despite weaker polar vortex
According to MeteoSwiss, speculation about a "winter of the century" is premature. The Federal Office of Meteorology is currently expecting a mild winter, according to an inquiry from Keystone-SDA.
There are currently increasing reports that a rare weather phenomenon over the North Pole could bring a harsh winter to Europe and Switzerland. This is known as sudden stratospheric warming (SSW).
Normally, a strong polar vortex holds the cold air over the Arctic. If it weakens, temperatures in the stratosphere, the layer of air at an altitude of around 10 to 50 kilometers, can rise by up to 50 degrees within a few days. This can change the polar jet stream and increase the likelihood of cold spells in several regions of the world.
According to MeteoSwiss, speculation about a "winter of the century" is premature. (symbolic image) KEYSTONE/LAURENT GILLIERONMeteoSwiss confirms that the polar vortex over the Arctic is currently weakening and deforming at an altitude of around 30 kilometers. The temperature in this layer of the stratosphere is likely to rise significantly over the next two weeks.
According to MeteoSwiss, however, the consequences of this for the winter weather in Switzerland remain to be seen. The decisive factor is whether the changes in the stratosphere will even make it into the troposphere - the layer of air that is relevant for our weather.
Nothing has therefore changed in the seasonal outlook so far: according to MeteoSwiss, the probability of a cold winter in Switzerland overall remains rather low for November to January. Few deviations from the long-term average are expected for December, but a high probability of above-average temperatures for January and February.

Minus temperatures even in the lowlands
Switzerland has had a cold night. Just ten days ago, a new November temperature record of 23.5 degrees was measured in Delsberg JU. In the early hours of Sunday morning, the thermometer in Delsberg showed minus 9.1 degrees.
It was particularly cold in La Brévine NE on Sunday night: the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (MeteoSwiss) recorded minus 26.3 degrees after 2.00 am. The measuring station is located at 1042 meters above sea level.
It was slightly warmer - if you can call it warm - in Buffalora GR with minus 23.7 degrees at around 1970 meters above sea level and in Samedan GR at around 1700 meters above sea level with minus 20.3 degrees.
It was also freezing cold at lower altitudes. MeteoSwiss recorded minus 14.5 degrees in Marsens FR (around 700 meters above sea level), for example. In Langnau im Emmental BE, the thermometer fell to minus 13.1 degrees. In Thun BE, it was minus 11.2 degrees last night and the measuring station in Kloten ZH recorded minus 9.1 degrees.
For Sunday afternoon, MeteoSwiss predicted temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees in the lowlands of German-speaking Switzerland. A trip to Ticino is unlikely to be worthwhile for heat-hungry people, where MeteoSwiss is expecting temperatures in the high 6 degrees.

Is an icy winter coming to Switzerland?
Meteorologists observe a rare sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) over the North Pole. This means that the stratosphere at an altitude of 10 to 50 kilometers suddenly warms up by 30 to 50 degrees, which weakens or even splits the polar vortex. Several media report on this.
Normally, the strong polar vortex traps the icy air in the Arctic region. However, if it breaks down, cold Arctic air can break out to the south and affect the weather across the entire northern hemisphere for weeks.
Arctic air will blow into central and eastern states around Thanksgiving, likely followed by another cold surge in early December.
— Ben Noll (@BenNollWeather) November 21, 2025
A battleground of frigid northern air and milder southern air will probably spark an active storm track, with winter storms possible in the north. pic.twitter.com/kDM5f1KBjcThese SSW events usually occur in January or February. It is exceptionally rare for them to begin as early as November; the last time such an early phenomenon was observed was in 1958. The consequences for Central Europe and Switzerland would be an increased likelihood of an easterly wind bringing frosty air from Russia. This means more snow at higher altitudes, colder temperatures at mid-altitudes and longer periods of frost in the lowlands, depending on pressure levels.
Meteorologists expect the effects to be felt from the end of November until well into December, possibly even into the new year. If a high pressure system settles over Russia at the same time, this will intensify the cold. Despite no guarantee of a harsh winter, the probability of an early and significant winter offensive in Switzerland increases significantly. The atmosphere over the North Pole is beginning to reshuffle the weather house of cards - the next few weeks will remain exciting.

First snow expected in the lowlands - federal government warns of slippery roads
Temperatures are approaching freezing point in the morning - even at low altitudes. According to Meteo News, a blanket of snow could therefore fall in the lowlands for the first time this season on Thursday and especially on Friday. The Federal Office of Meteorology is already warning of moderately icy roads.
According to Meteo News, a measurable snow cover in the lowlands would be "earlier than average" in many places. However, it would be just as early as last year. The first snowfall on November 21-22 saw record amounts of snow locally.
The Federal Office of Meteorology is already warning of moderately icy roads. Screenshot Bundesamt für MeteorologieSnow and sleet are even more likely, especially along the Alps. If there is not enough snow in the northern lowlands on Thursday, the chance remains until Monday night. After that, the snow line will rise again. In the lowlands, it should be two to five degrees during the day next week.

Snowfall into the lowlands
After a mostly sunny and dry Tuesday, the weather is about to change in German-speaking Switzerland. According to MeteoSwiss, snow will arrive in large parts of the region in the night to Thursday. The lowlands will also be affected.
On Wednesday, it will still be partly foggy on the Central Plateau in the morning, but otherwise quite sunny. The clouds will thicken during the afternoon. In the night to Thursday, snowfall will start from the west. At altitudes below 500 meters, the snow may also fall as sleet. MeteoSwiss expects a few centimetres of fresh snow at 500 to 700 meters, and up to 10 centimetres along the foothills of the Alps.
Up to 10 centimetres are expected in Zurich. In Bern, there could even be 10 to 20 centimetres of fresh snow on Friday. Screenshot/MeteoschweizThursday will bring changeable weather in the lowlands with lots of clouds and snow showers. Only at the lowest altitudes will there be some sleet. In the foothills of the Alps and the Alps, it will snow more frequently and more heavily, especially on the northern slopes of the Alps. Temperatures will be around 0 degrees in the early morning and 3 degrees in the afternoon in the lowlands.
By Friday morning, 2 to 10 centimetres of fresh snow may fall in the lowlands. In the Alps, MeteoSwiss is expecting 10 to 20 centimetres. Locally, up to 30 centimetres are possible on the northern slopes of the Alps. The wind will initially blow moderately on Wednesday, but will turn to the southwest and freshen up in the afternoon. Moderate to strong westerly to north-westerly winds on Thursday.

The onset of winter is now reaching the lowlands
Winter is knocking on the door with snowfall in the first regions at the start of the week (archive image). Picture: Keystone/dpa/Matthias BeinFor the first time this winter, snow is falling as far as the lowlands today: the snow line drops from 1800 to around 700 meters during the course of the day, and locally even down to 500 meters towards the evening. The precipitation will continue in many regions, especially on the northern slopes of the Alps. By Tuesday morning, up to 40 centimetres of fresh snow are expected above 1800 meters, and between 5 and 15 centimetres above 1000 meters.
Temperatures in the lowlands will be between 3 and 8 degrees, with a freshening north-westerly wind - strong at times in the Alpine valleys. It will remain wintry in the coming days: on Wednesday and Thursday, there is another threat of snow showers as far as the Central Plateau, sometimes mixed with rain. In the lowlands, fog and minus temperatures are possible in some areas in the morning.
Winter will continue to be present in the coming days. On Tuesday, the weather will be partly sunny in the lowlands, but it will remain cold at high altitudes with temperatures of -1 degrees in the morning and around 4 degrees in the afternoon. On Wednesday, it will initially be friendly before new clouds and precipitation move in from the northwest, with the snow line dropping again to low altitudes.
Thursday will bring widespread snow, especially on the northern slopes of the Alps, while a mixture of rain and snow is possible in the lowlands - with highs around 4 degrees. Friday will remain wintry with isolated snow showers and chilly breezes that will intensify the chill. The weekend will be very cloudy with a further risk of snowfall, but sunny spells are also possible in the Alps. Temperatures will not rise above 2 to 4 degrees.

New November temperature record of 23.5 degrees in Delsberg JU
A new November temperature record of 23.5 degrees was set in Delsberg JU on Thursday. The last record in the town was 22.8 degrees and dates back to 2023, according to Meteonews.
The weather service expected further high readings at the weather stations over the course of the day. Shortly after midday, temperatures were close to the 20-degree mark in many places, for example in Tänikon TG at 18.4 degrees and in Basel at 18.2 degrees.

— MeteoNews Schweiz (@MeteoNewsAG) November 13, 2025The new record in Delsberg is significantly higher than the record set in 2023, Meteonews wrote on the X platform. The measurement data has been collected since 1959. Other possible record candidates are the Föhn valleys. In Vaduz in the Principality of Liechtenstein, for example, the current record for November is 23.7 degrees.
The weather services are also forecasting mild temperatures for tomorrow, Friday. These are "exceptionally high for this time of year", wrote Meteonews on its website. The zero degree limit was between 3300 and 3500 meters on Thursday.
By the beginning of next week, the weather will become gloomier and colder. On Monday, a cold front will finally move across northern Switzerland. The snow line is expected to drop below 1500 meters, according to the report.

Sunshine galore on Thursday: Föhn brings temperatures of up to 18 degrees
A low over Scotland is still bringing humid air to Switzerland, but then the country will be on the edge of a high with a core over eastern and southern Europe - and very mild air will flow in from the southwest as a result, forecasts "Meteo Switzerland".
This will cause temperatures to rise once again, peaking on Thursday: The whole of Switzerland can expect bright sunshine. The mercury will rise to up to 18 degrees in the foehn regions in the west.
Forecast for Thursday, November 13. Meteo SchweizHigh fog may gather on Friday, but temperatures will remain high on the northern side of the Alps with values between 13 degrees in Schaffhausen and 17 degrees in Neuchâtel. On Saturday, clouds will cover the sky and it will be noticeably cooler: the warmest temperatures will be 12 degrees in Geneva and Graubünden.

A small summer revival at the weekend - then it gets colder again
The day begins in typical autumnal fashion: in the lowlands there is initially fog with an upper limit at around 800 meters. But according to Roger Perret, meteorologist at "Meteonews", there is hope - this should "largely dissipate" during the day. After that, we can expect at least "partly sunny weather" in the morning, before increasingly dense clouds spread in the afternoon. Towards the evening, it may even rain lightly in the Jura and in north-western Switzerland.
Temperatures will be mildly autumnal: 13 to 15 degrees, up to 17 degrees in north-western Switzerland. In the Alpine valleys with light foehn winds, even 18 to 21 degrees are possible. The zero degree limit? It will remain at a lofty 3300 to 3800 meters. In the south, on the other hand, the clouds will accumulate - it will remain mostly cloudy with occasional rain and a maximum temperature of 14 to 15 degrees.
— MeteoNews Schweiz (@MeteoNewsAG) October 31, 2025On Sunday, a cold front from an Atlantic low will roll in and cause widespread cloudy and occasionally wet weather. During the course of the day, the main focus of the precipitation will shift to the Alps, with some clearing possible in the lowlands towards the evening. Temperatures will drop slightly, climbing to 11 to 13 degrees with a weak to moderate south-westerly wind. The snow line will drop to around 1600 meters. In the south, it will remain between 13 and 14 degrees.
There are signs of an improvement in the weather at the start of the week: A high pressure system spreads from the southwest and the air becomes drier. Although we still start with high fog-like residual clouds in the north, the sun will prevail as the day progresses. In the south, it will even shine all day thanks to a northerly foehn.
Temperatures: Around 10 to 11 degrees in the north with a westerly wind, milder 18 degrees in the south.

Storm depression "Benjamin" makes for a stormy Thursday
Today, the low-pressure system "Benjamin" is moving from the English Channel to the North Sea. It will steer a cold front towards Switzerland and trigger an autumn storm with maximum gusts of wind on the northern side of the Alps. The expected wind peaks in the lowlands are between 60 and 100 kilometers per hour. In the Alpine valleys, Föhn winds will blow temporarily during the night and in the morning. On the Jura heights and the mountains of the Alpine foothills and the Alps, there will be gale-force gusts of 100 to locally 140 kilometers per hour, reports SRF Meteo.
Gale-force gusts are expected on the mountains, warns MeteoNews.

Gusts of up to 160 km/h, now also warned by the federal government
The federal government has declared danger level 3. MeteoschweizNow it's getting serious: the federal government has issued an official storm warning for Thursday. In Switzerland, there is a threat of peak winds of up to 110 km/h in the lowlands and gale-force winds in the mountains.
The approaching cold front will bring rain and strong gusts across the country. At low altitudes, meteorologists are expecting wind speeds of 80 to 90 kilometers per hour. In higher regions, the gusts could reach up to 160 km/h - values bordering on hurricane force.
After days of calm autumn weather, a storm is approaching over Switzerland on Thursday. The federal government warns of heavy gusts and widespread storm damage. Large parts of the country are affected - from the foothills of the Alps to the Central Plateau.
According to the official announcement, wind speeds of between 90 and 110 kilometers per hour may occur at low and medium altitudes. In the higher regions, wind speeds of 130 to 160 km/h are possible - values bordering on hurricane force.
The authorities are expecting branches to break off, trees to fall and roofs to be damaged. Lightly attached objects such as tents, scaffolding and parasols are particularly at risk. Road, rail and air traffic is also likely to be affected at times, according to the federal government's statement. Drivers should be prepared for strong crosswinds and limited visibility.
The storm will be accompanied by an active cold front, which will bring rain and a significant drop in temperature. Behind the front, the snow line will drop to around 1000 meters, which means that wet snow is also possible in the Alpine valleys.
Meteorologists are talking about the first real autumn storm of the year. It is likely to be particularly heavy on Friday night before the weather calms down again at the weekend.
The recommendation of the emergency services is clear: secure loose objects, close windows and shutters and avoid walking in the forest if possible.

First autumn storm hits Switzerland on Thursday
It could get really windy on Thursday. KEYSTONEAfter several dry weeks, Switzerland is facing a significant change in the weather. As MeteoNews reports, a low pressure system near the British Isles will bring the first precipitation on Monday - the first for around two weeks. Initially, the rain will mainly affect the west, but the front will weaken in the afternoon and also reach eastern Switzerland.
The weather will remain changeable on Tuesday and Wednesday, with dense clouds, intermittent rain and a moderate south-westerly wind. Only in Ticino and parts of Graubünden is it likely to remain temporarily dry. Temperatures will rise to around 15 degrees, with up to 17 degrees possible in foehn regions.
According to MeteoNews, Thursday will be the most exciting day of the week. A rapidly deepening storm depression will move from England across the North Sea to Denmark, bringing Switzerland to the edge of its wind field. The associated cold front will reach the country during the course of the day - with heavy showers and gale-force winds of up to 90 km/h in the lowlands.
Significantly higher values are possible in the mountains: MeteoNews is expecting gale-force winds of between 120 and 150 km/h. On the Alpine ridges, foehn winds are also expected for a short time before the front moves through.
Behind the cold front, windy and much cooler weather will prevail on Friday. The snow line is expected to drop to around 1000 meters over the weekend, while highs in the Central Plateau are likely to remain in the single digits.
While the northern side of the Alps will have to contend with rain and wind, the south will remain favorably weathered - with a northerly foehn in the valleys and more sunshine.

"Amy" causes restrictions in several countries
The storm "Amy" is causing restrictions in several countries, for example in air traffic. For example, around 80 arriving and 70 departing flights had to be canceled due to a storm at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport. A spokesperson for the airport told the ANP news agency that this mainly affected westbound flights operated by Dutch airline KLM on Saturday, including flights to the UK.
The passengers were to be rebooked for later connections. The total number of passengers affected was not initially reported.
In Bergen, Norway, storm "Amy" has already caused flooding and fallen trees. In Germany, gale-force winds are causing restrictions in the timetable for ferries to the North Sea and Baltic Sea islands. All trips of the "Halunder Jet" to and from Heligoland on Saturday and Sunday have been canceled due to the weather. Meteorologists from the German Weather Service (DWD) are expecting wind speeds of up to 110 kilometers per hour on Sylt on Saturday.
Several ferry connections to the Dutch Wadden Islands were also suspended in the Netherlands due to the storm. Outdoor activities such as markets, sports competitions and festivals were also canceled in many places.
Strong winds are also blowing in Malmö in Sweden. KEYSTONEThe storm also swept across parts of the UK, Norway and Ireland in the past few hours, causing power outages, closed roads and canceled flights and train connections. In parts of Scotland, tens of thousands of people were without power. Wind speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour affected the power supply.
In London, parks were closed for this Saturday as a precautionary measure, according to the Royal Parks Authority. There were also power outages in parts of Norway and numerous train services had to be suspended. The Scandinavian country's meteorological institute is still expecting gale-force winds and large amounts of rain in places.

It will be windy on Saturday
The wind will pick up strongly in Switzerland on Saturday, especially in the mountains. The day will start off nicely with sun and clouds. Storm and rain move across Switzerland - Low pressure system "Amy" heads for Europe
Dark clouds gather over Switzerland. (archive picture) Picture: KeystoneAutumn is getting serious: the first precipitation is expected early on Saturday morning, but the rain will intensify significantly as the day progresses. The reason for this is low pressure system "Amy", which has formed on the east coast of North America and is now heading for Central Europe. According to SRF Meteo, intense rain and stormy gusts are expected between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.
Particularly tricky: The snow line will initially be around 2500 meters, but will quickly drop to 1500 to 1800 meters in the evening. This means that fresh snow is also to be expected in higher Alpine valleys. The situation will be more relaxed on Sunday: Sunshine and clouds will alternate, with temperatures reaching around 13 degrees.
The forecast for Monday looks uncertain, but MeteoSwiss thinks a sunny scenario with highs of around 18 degrees is likely. One thing is clear: fall is here - and will bring weather changes in quick succession.

Onset of winter in the Alps
Winter arrived surprisingly early in the Alps overnight. Heavy snowflakes fell from around 1400 meters, with a thick blanket of snow forming in many places. Andermatt was particularly affected, with up to 10 centimetres of wet snow on Saturday morning. This was reported by a BRK News reporter.
The Gotthard Pass was closed. BRK NewsThe Gotthard Pass and several other links such as the Nufenen Pass and the Wassen-Meiringen route had to be closed. Traffic jams of up to 11 kilometers in length and waiting times of almost two hours occurred on the Gotthard freeway around midday.
On Saturday, it will remain changeable in the Alps with further snow showers into the evening. The snow line will fluctuate between 1600 and 2000 meters, above which up to 20 centimeters of fresh snow is possible. In the lowlands, however, the weather is increasingly calming down, with sunny spells, especially in the west.
This was the situation in Andermatt UR. BRK NewsOn Sunday, the situation will be friendlier: after the fog lifts, it will remain mostly dry and sunny, with occasional spring clouds in the Alps, but only isolated showers. Temperatures will rise to up to 17 degrees on the Central Plateau, with the zero degree line climbing back towards 3000 meters.

It was warmer than usual here in Switzerland in September
September 2025 was slightly warmer than usual in Switzerland: on average, the temperature was 0.6 degrees above the long-term average. It was noticeably milder in the mountains in particular. Overall, the month was in the middle of the range since measurements began. This is shown in MeteoSwiss's first review of September 2025.
The colors show how much the monthly average temperature deviated from the multi-year average (1991-2020). MeteoschweizOn the other hand, it poured down heavily in many places: in the Jura, the Central Plateau and especially in Ticino, twice as much rain fell as usual in some places. Over 300 millimetres fell in Lugano. Only in the Engadin did it remain comparatively dry.
Ticino and the Jura saw the most rain in September. MeteoschweizIn contrast, the sun was less frequent - in many places only around three quarters of the normal hours. All in all, a changeable transition month with rain, thunderstorms and a brief hint of late summer.

Go out in the sun again - the rain is coming tonight and it will be cold tomorrow
The weather forecasts have been pointing to this for days: Sunday will be the end of late summer, with a wet cold front reaching Switzerland. At the moment, it appears that the Föhn wind is deflecting the front arriving from the west to the north. The first rain showers will therefore fall along the Jura.
Meteonews is forecasting the last day of summer in 2025. Meteonews AGAt the same time, however, a rain cell is already moving over the Gotthard from the south, with rain falling in both Airolo and Göschenen shortly before midday.
It will probably remain dry in the afternoon, especially in the eastern midlands, and the temperatures will be mild, making it ideal for enjoying the fresh air once again.
In the evening, according to current forecasts from 9 pm, it will rain practically all over Switzerland. And it will be so heavy in some areas that the federal government will issue level 3 out of 5 warnings for the Flüelen-Unterschächen area, i.e. towards the Klausen Pass. It should remain dry in Graubünden and southern Ticino.
In the evening there will be rain, lots of rain. The Grisons and Ticino could be spared. Meteonews AGOvernight, temperatures will plummet by 10 degrees or more. It will remain wet to changeable. A consolation for those who would prefer to skip the fall: Over the course of the week, the snow line will drop from 2500 to 1500 meters.
