Specialist divers have succeeded in penetrating the hull of a sailing yacht off the coast of Sicily after it sank. The divers, who specialize in caves, had to open a three-centimetre-thick pane of glass underwater.

This was reported by the Italian news agency Ansa, citing the fire department. They were able to get inside the luxury yacht "Bayesian" through a small gap, but still not into the cabins on the lower deck where the six missing people are believed to be.

The wreck of the approximately 50-metre-long "Bayesian" is at a depth of 49 meters on the seabed. According to the fire department, the ship is lying on its side, making underwater work difficult. On Tuesday, the fire department's diving units were already able to examine some of the rooms below the bridge.

The "Bayesian" sank in a heavy storm with strong winds off the port of Porticello, not far from Palermo, early on Monday morning. A total of 22 people were on board. 15 people were rescued after the accident and brought ashore. Initially, seven people were missing, but a body was later found in the water. The search for the six missing people has been in full swing ever since.

According to the authorities, the six missing persons are four British nationals and two US citizens. Among the missing are British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his daughter. Two married couples are also missing.

Memories of the "Costa Concordia"

The rescue of the passengers is so complicated that it reminds the rescue teams of the case of the Costa Concordia. The cruise ship sank off the coast of Tuscany in 2012. Back then, 32 people lost their lives. "The Bayesian is a little Concordia," Italian media quoted one of the rescue divers involved.
