In future, landlords in cantons with mandatory forms will have to provide more comprehensive information when notifying the initial rent. In doing so, the Federal Council wants to ensure greater transparency. Further reform steps in the rental system are to follow.

From October 1, landlords must now provide the most recent values for the reference interest rate and inflation for the previous rent. On Friday, the Federal Council brought the amended Ordinance on the Rent and Lease of Residential and Commercial Premises into force on this date.
The adjustment will enable tenants to better assess the initial rent and evaluate whether there are grounds for a challenge, as the federal government announced. The development of the reference interest rate and inflation could, under certain circumstances, be an indication that the initial rent is unfair.
Other measures to curb rents were controversial during the consultation process. According to the Federal Council, they will not be pursued further for the time being.
