Switzerland consumed slightly more cheese last year. Almost two thirds of this came from domestic production. (archive image)

Mr. and Mrs. Swiss consumed more cheese last year. A total of 217,596 tons of cheese from Switzerland and abroad were consumed.
This is 7323 tons more than in the previous year, as reported by the Swiss Milk Producers (SMP) on Thursday. Per capita, this corresponds to an average consumption of 23.71 kilograms of cheese per year. According to the SMP, this is 590 grams or 2.5 percent more than in the previous year.
More than two thirds of the total amount consumed consisted of quark, fresh and semi-hard cheese. These dairy products also saw the biggest increase compared to the previous year. Compared to 2024, 6.2% more fresh cheese and quark was consumed last year. The semi-hard and extra-hard cheese categories increased by 5.4% and 0.7% respectively.
However, all other dairy products such as soft and hard cheese, as well as sheep, goat and buffalo cheese, processed cheese and ready-made fondue recorded a decline.
At 63.3%, almost two thirds of the cheese consumed came from Switzerland. According to the SMP, this figure has remained largely stable over the last three years.
