The Swiss market for new commercial vehicles stagnated last year. However, the differences between the vehicle categories were large, according to the Swiss Automobile Import Association.

In total, 42,205 new registrations were recorded in 2024, just 38 fewer than in the previous year, according to a press release issued on Tuesday. Heavy commercial vehicles were in high demand. However, the camper boom now seems to be over for good.

Specifically, with 4876 registrations, 11.6 percent more heavy commercial vehicles over 3.5 tons were newly registered than in the previous year. Light commercial vehicles (vans and light articulated lorries up to 3.5 tons total weight) saw a small increase of 0.9 percent with 30,529 registrations.

According to Auto Schweiz, new passenger transportation vehicles were the only segment to suffer a decline last year. Their number fell by 10.7 percent to 6800 new registrations.

Once again, motorhomes were the main reason for this. With only 5930 vehicles, 10 percent fewer campers took to the roads than in 2023. From the peak of 7588 new motorhomes reached in 2021 in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the number of registrations has now shrunk by 21.8 percent.
