In July, the consumer sentiment index calculated by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (Seco) fell by 0.4 points year-on-year to minus 32.8 points.

Compared to the previous month, sentiment has also deteriorated slightly. In June it was minus 32.2 points. In April, sentiment had fallen to minus 42.4, mainly due to the trade disputes with the USA, but since then there has been a noticeable upward trend.

According to the press release on Friday, the sub-indices "Past financial situation", "Expected financial situation" and "Time for major purchases" in particular were above the previous year's figures. In contrast, the "Expected economic development" sub-indices were significantly below the previous year's level.

The consumer sentiment index is published monthly on the basis of a survey conducted by Seco. Data has been collected since 1972. In contrast to many common economic indicators, consumer sentiment refers to private households.
