The Swiss hotel industry once again welcomed more guests in September. After nine months, the industry thus remains on course to beat the record for overnight stays from the previous year.

The number of overnight stays in Swiss hotels rose by 2.1 percent to 4.1 million, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Tuesday. The increase in September does not come as a surprise. Initial provisional estimates by the FSO had already indicated growth.

The growth was driven in particular by Swiss guests. With 1.9 million overnight stays, the increase here was 2.9 percent. Meanwhile, overnight stays by guests from abroad rose by 1.3 percent to 2.1 million.

Overnight stays record still in sight

Over the period from January to September 2025, the Swiss hotel industry recorded 34.4 million overnight stays. This is 1.9 percent more than in the same period last year.

Over nine months, growth was driven in particular by guests from abroad: +3.0% to 17.9 million overnight stays. Swiss tourists accounted for 16.5 million overnight stays, an increase of 0.7%.

The industry therefore remains on course to beat last year's record of 42.8 million overnight stays. The FSO will publish initial estimates of overnight stays in October on November 17.
