The upward trend in the Swiss tourism industry came to a halt last month. The number of overnight stays in hotels fell slightly in February compared to the previous year.

The number of overnight stays fell by a total of 2.7 percent in February, as the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) announced in a second estimate on Monday. The decline is therefore slightly lower than in the first estimate. A week ago, a decline of 3.1% had been reported.

One reason for the decline in February is the absence of a calendar day due to the leap year 2024. In the previous month of January, an increase of 3.5% was recorded.

Decline among domestic guests

Domestic guests in particular spent fewer nights in local hotels in February. Overnight stays fell significantly by 6.1 percent compared to the same month last year.

In contrast, guests from abroad recorded a slight increase of 1.5 percent. The largest increase was recorded by travelers from the United States with a plus of 14 percent. In February, 0.5% more guests came from Europe, while China (-23%) and the Gulf States (-5.6%) fell short of the previous year's figure.

The positive trend from the previous year therefore did not continue in the Swiss tourism industry in the second month of 2025. Last year, a new record was set with 42.8 million overnight stays.
