The updated figures are therefore slightly higher than last week's first estimate, when the FSO had only expected an increase of 4.1%. This continues the positive trend of the previous months.
The growth was driven in particular by domestic guests: in a "golden October" in terms of weather, Swiss nationals accounted for 6.1% more overnight stays than a year ago.
More guests from China
Overnight stays by guests from abroad rose by just 2.4 percent in October. There was strong growth among travelers from China (+13.9 percent). The increase in guests from the USA amounted to 5.0 percent.
More tourists also came to Switzerland from Europe (+2.1 percent). Germany, the largest European market of origin, saw an increase of 1.4%. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom (+7.5%) and France (+3.5%) recorded higher growth rates. In contrast, significantly fewer guests came from the Netherlands (-11.7 percent).
Continuing on record course
From January to the end of September, the industry had already registered 34.4 million overnight stays (+1.9 percent). With the October figures now published, the hotel industry is on course to surpass last year's record of 42.8 million overnight stays before the start of the winter season.
The final and absolute figures for January to October will be published on December 8.
