The Swiss again spent more money in September than in the previous year. According to the Postfinance consumption indicator, spending was 1.2% higher than in the same month last year.

As many consumer goods were cheaper than a year ago, real growth was even stronger, as Postfinance announced on Monday. The consumption indicator was up for the 13th month in a row, although the September figure was slightly lower than in the previous two months.

Despite the ongoing uncertainty surrounding economic development, the massive US tariffs of 39% on Swiss exports and the weakness of important trading partners such as Germany and China, private consumption remained robust.

Differences in the sectors

There are differences between the individual areas of consumption. Seasonally adjusted (compared to the previous month), spending on everyday goods and services fell slightly, particularly in the case of car purchases and expectations. By contrast, households spent slightly more on food.

Less was also spent on electronics and restaurant visits in the "Fun & Leisure" segment, but the willingness to spend remained at a high level overall, according to Postfinance. Spending in the "Beauty & Wellness" segment remained virtually unchanged: an increase in health treatments was offset by a decline in clothing purchases.

In contrast, demand for travel declined. For the third time in a row, consumers spent less on hotel accommodation and restaurant visits abroad in September.

Postfinance collects the monthly consumption indicator using anonymized transaction data from its approximately 2.4 million customers. The index is regarded as an early indicator of consumer trends in Switzerland.
