Selling panic breaks out on the financial markets at midday on Friday. Following the broad-based tariffs imposed by US President Trump on Wednesday evening, China has now announced counter-tariffs on US imports amounting to 34%. The trade war is therefore in full swing.

The SMI lost more than 200 points within a few minutes. After briefly slipping below the 11,700 mark, the leading index is currently trading 4.4 percent lower at 11,746 points. It had already fallen by 2.5 percent on Thursday.

The European stock markets are experiencing a similar downward trend. The German Dax and the French Cac 40 both lost more than 4 percent. Futures on Wall Street also point to massive price losses at the start of trading.

The Customs Commission of the Chinese State Council announced that the tariffs will come into force on April 10.
