The federal government has disposed of over CHF 1.3 billion worth of unused coronavirus vaccine. According to figures from the government accounts, less than half as much was actually used in Switzerland.

At the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency, the Federal Finance Administration confirmed corresponding calculations by the Sonntagszeitung newspaper and Le Matin Dimanche.

Between 2020 and 2023, Switzerland purchased Covid medical supplies worth around CHF 2.3 billion. Material worth CHF 0.57 billion was used in Switzerland. It also sent vaccines worth CHF 0.27 billion abroad as humanitarian aid.

This leaves material worth CHF 1.45 billion. According to the government accounts, this was "value-adjusted".

According to the Federal Finance Administration, 90 percent of the value adjustments relate to vaccines that had to be disposed of after their expiry date. This corresponds to over 1.3 billion Swiss francs.
