Switzerland took up its second presidency of the UN Security Council on the day of an Iranian missile attack on Israel and the launch of an Israeli ground offensive. On Tuesday, it called for the Security Council to meet as soon as possible.

Discussions had already taken place in the morning, said Swiss UN Ambassador Pascale Baeriswyl in the early afternoon in New York (early evening in Switzerland). "We are following the rapidly changing situation with great concern but also very closely," Baeriswyl told the media. "We are in contact with everyone," she continued.

She does not believe that the UN Security Council needs to pass a new resolution. What is needed, however, is the urgent implementation of the UN resolution, which, in addition to the absence of Israeli troops in Lebanon, provides for the withdrawal of Hezbollah from southern Lebanon and its disarmament. The UN ambassador stated that the cessation of hostilities and a ceasefire were a priority.
