Government Council BS 3.2 million francs for greening the Globus department store in Basel

The Basel government is asking the Grand Council for 3.24 million francs for the greening of the façade and roof of the Globus department store in Basel. The store will be extensively renovated and is expected to reopen in winter 2025.

The roof and facades of the building on Marktplatz are to be intensively covered with climbing plants, perennials, large and small shrubs, as the government announced on Tuesday. The sum required for this is to be taken from the value-added tax fund.

The greening could reduce the heat load in the city center thanks to the evaporation capacity of the plants, according to the statement. With species-rich planting, the highest possible level of biodiversity will be taken into account.
