The municipalities of the canton of Lucerne achieved a positive overall financial result in 2023. Their revenue surplus amounted to CHF 213.6 million, according to Lustat Statistik Luzern.

The municipalities exceeded the previous year's result by 36.4 million francs, as Lustat wrote in a press release on Monday. Their total expenditure rose by 118.6 million to 3.9 billion francs. Total income rose by CHF 155.0 million to CHF 4.1 billion.

With a revenue surplus of 213.6 million francs, the municipalities once again achieved a record figure in 2023, Lustat continued. Expectations were exceeded. The majority of municipalities closed the year better than budgeted.

66 of Lucerne's 80 municipalities achieved positive financial statements, the report continued. In 25 municipalities, surplus revenue of over one million francs was achieved.

According to Lustat, the city of Lucerne led the way with a surplus of CHF 80.1 million, followed by the city of Kriens (CHF 59.4 million) and Weggis (CHF 9.6 million). In both Lucerne and Kriens, tax income from legal entities exceeded budget expectations by double-digit millions.

14 municipalities reported a negative accounting result - 7 more than in the previous year. The municipalities of Horw (CHF 8.6 million), Schenkon (CHF 2.2 million) and Altbüron (CHF 0.6 million) recorded the highest expenditure surpluses. According to Lustat, the municipalities covered their expense surpluses from existing equity. No municipality had a balance sheet deficit at the end of 2023.
