Parliament had unanimously approved an indirect counter-proposal. According to this proposal, an additional 1000 hectares of wetlands are to be created in the canton of Aargau by 2060 in order to preserve and strengthen biodiversity.

The initiative wanted to achieve much the same thing, but the time frame was tighter. The initiators had supported the indirect counter-proposal.

The committee announced on Wednesday that this was a solution developed jointly with all stakeholders. The solution is "groundbreaking" This success of all stakeholders stands "for cooperation and solution-oriented dialog at eye level in the canton of Aargau".

It is to be hoped that other cantons will follow Aargau's example, according to the press release from the Pro Natura Aargau organization. It is a matter of cross-party cooperation between representatives of nature conservation, agriculture and forestry.

The initiative of various environmental organizations had come about with 4252 valid signatures. The withdrawal of the petition for a referendum will be published in the cantonal official gazette next Friday.
