Alexandra Grossenbacher will become the new governor of Emmental at the beginning of 2025. She succeeds Claudia Rindlisbacher, who has announced her resignation at the end of the year. Grossenbacher comes from Münsingen and is independent.
Grossenbacher will be declared elected by the cantonal government in a silent election, as announced by the Bern State Chancellery on Tuesday. She was the only candidate to put herself forward for the by-election. This means that the election scheduled for September 22 will not take place.
The administrative district of Emmental comprises 39 municipalities with a total population of over 97,000. The area stretches from rural Schangnau to more urban areas on the outskirts of Bern or around Burgdorf to the Solothurn cantonal border near Bätterkinden.
Government governors are the canton's representatives in the regions. For example, they issue building permits or decide on appeals against decisions made by municipalities. The governors are elected by the population of the respective administrative district for a term of office of four years.
