Auxiliary Bishop Josef Stübi has already been resident canon of Solothurn since April 2023, according to the State Chancellery. He has now also been appointed provost of the cathedral as Arno Stadelmann's successor. Stübi was previously parish priest of Baden AG.
The 56-year-old Georges Schwickerath comes from Luxembourg and, after studying theology in Lucerne, was a pastor in Bern and Muri AG, among other places. He will succeed Stadelmann as resident canon of Solothurn from September 1.
The 66-year-old Markus Thürig was previously resident canon of Lucerne. Thürig will succeed Canon Agnell Rickenmann as resident canon of Solothurn on November 1, 2024, as announced by the State Chancellery.
Ten cantons belong to the diocese of Basel: AG, BE, BL, BS, JU, LU, TG, SH, SO and ZG. With around one million faithful, it is the largest diocese in Switzerland.
The canons and their cathedral provost as president are the political links between the cantons and the diocese of the Roman Catholic diocese of Basel. Together, as the cathedral chapter, they elect the diocesan bishop and advise him on political issues.
