In the general elections for the Basel cantonal government council, the incumbent Director of Building and Transport Esther Keller (GLP) has to go through to the second round of voting. The other six current members of the cantonal government were confirmed in office in the first round of voting on Sunday.

According to the final results of the State Chancellery, the top result was achieved by the incumbent Director of Finance Tanja Soland (SP) with 34,165 votes, followed by Director of Economic Affairs Kaspar Sutter (SP) with 29,395 votes and President of the Government Conradin Cramer (LDP) with 28,032 votes.
The absolute majority of 23,189 votes was also achieved by Health Director Lukas Engelberger (center) with 27,872 votes, Education Director Mustafa Atici (SP), who was only elected to the government in April, with 27,517 votes and Stephanie Eymann (LDP) with 26,471 votes.
Building and Transport Director Esther Keller (GLP), who has been in office since the beginning of 2021, received 21,863 votes and fell short of the absolute majority. She will have to go to the second ballot on November 24.
Clear choice for the presidency
The new government council candidates Anina Ineichen (Greens) also fell short of the absolute majority with 18,320 votes, Eva Biland (FDP) with 15,876 votes, Oliver Bolliger (Basta) with 14,566 votes and Stefan Suter (SVP) with 14,518 votes. The far-right candidate Eric Weber had no chance with 2,999 votes. The voter turnout was 44.8 percent.
In the election to the presidency of the cantonal government, Cramer, who has been in office since May, received 24,480 votes, leaving his competitors further behind. The absolute majority was 22,396 votes. His Green challenger Ineichen received 14,439 votes and Weber 1436 votes.
