The natural turf in Biel's Tissot Arena is to be replaced by artificial turf. This was announced by the city of Biel on Wednesday. Despite intensive maintenance, the natural grass football pitch could hardly be kept playable.

The reasons for this are turf diseases, simultaneous resistance to pesticides and an increasingly insufficient strength of the turf. The lack of soil permeability is particularly responsible for this.

The football pitch was put into operation in 2015. Up to 30 matches are played on the natural turf every year from February to November. According to the city, closure of the pitch can no longer be ruled out due to its poor quality.

The municipal council is requesting a commitment credit of CHF 2.93 million to be charged to the Tissot Arena special account for the installation of the artificial turf and the complete renewal of the layer structure and the irrigation system. The City Council will decide on this at its October meeting.
