The canton of Bern should accelerate the adjustment of compensation for central burdens. This is the demand of the Grand Council Finance Commission.

In the canton of Bern, larger cities receive compensation for their central burdens. Bern, Biel and Thun currently benefit from such compensation. Burgdorf and Langenthal are now also to receive such a lump-sum payment. This may also be lower than that for the larger cities.

The cantonal government has announced that it will examine this adjustment over the next few years. Every four years, it will present Parliament with an evaluation report on the impact of the equalization of finances and burdens. A review should then take place as part of the next report.

This is too slow for the Finance Committee, as it writes in a press release on Wednesday. The Commission does not want to wait four years. Instead, it wants to use a planning declaration to ensure that the change comes in two years' time. The Grand Council will decide on this in its fall session.
