From August 1, 2024, classroom teachers in the canton of Bern will receive a monthly function allowance of CHF 300 and a five-percent employment rate for their work as a classroom teacher. This was announced by the Canton of Bern's Department of Education and Culture (BKD) on Monday.

The BKD also wants to improve the framework conditions for school management. Together with classroom teachers, they are the backbone of schools. According to the BKD, it is working on increasing the employment percentages for head teachers at elementary school.

Post-qualification of lateral entrants

In order to ensure the quality of lateral entrants, the BKD is committed to ensuring that they complete the necessary training within a reasonable period of time. To this end, it is providing financial incentives for the post-qualification of "inadequately trained teachers".

According to the BKD, teachers who change careers make a valuable contribution and help schools to alleviate the shortage of specialist staff. For example, the summer camp introduced by the University of Teacher Education last year to prepare teachers without a teaching diploma was again met with great interest this year.

However, according to the BKD, the staffing situation at schools remains tense. In the canton of Bern, 43 permanent positions are currently being advertised as of August, four of which are in regular teaching.
