This is due to expiring rental contracts and the increasing number of asylum applications, as the canton of Zug announced on Thursday. The situation in the asylum and refugee sector is "tense" and capacity limits will "soon be reached".
At a conference held at the end of June, the target of 1000 accommodation places was approached, it added. The municipalities had agreed to make their contribution. The government drew a positive conclusion and said that a "common position" had been developed. The canton intends to announce the next steps in the fall.
In November 2023, the canton of Zug announced that if the above-ground accommodation was exhausted, underground shelters could also be used to temporarily accommodate asylum seekers. If these capacities are also exhausted, an emergency situation would have to be declared and the asylum seekers would be assigned directly to the municipality. This scenario must be prevented, the government wrote in the press release.
