With Franziska Biner, a woman has once again been elected to the Valais government. The centrist politician was the only one of the six candidates to be elected in the first round of voting. All the others, including the three incumbents, had to go through to the second ballot.

With 51,149 votes, Biner was the only one to exceed the absolute majority of 50,420 votes and was therefore elected in the first round. The new candidate from Upper Valais even outperformed all the previous members of the State Council, as the final results published by the State Chancellery on Sunday show.

The previous State Councillor Christope Darbellay from the center came in second place with 41,376. He was followed by the previous State Councillors Mathias Reynard from the SP with 41,368 votes and Franz Ruppen from the SVP with 37,341 votes.

The new FDP candidate Stéphane Ganzer achieved a respectable result with 32,692 votes. The Green Party's candidate Emmanuel Revaz was relegated to last place with 19,540 votes.

Voter turnout was just under 45 percent.
