Climate City of Zurich employees may only fly in exceptional cases
From 2025, the City of Zurich will only allow its employees to travel by plane on business trips with exceptional permission. In general, business trips will only be permitted if the exchange is not possible digitally.

The adjustment to business travel is a contribution to achieving the climate target, as the Zurich City Council announced on Wednesday. Zurich aims to be climate-neutral by 2040. If business trips are still necessary, the train or another means of public transport must be preferred.
There are clear guidelines for air travel: There must be important reasons for it and it must always be approved. In addition, the city will only reimburse employees for an economy ticket, regardless of how long the flight takes. The CO2 emissions of the flight must be offset via a climate ticket.
With this new regulation, the city council is implementing two postulates from the municipal council. The postulate from the SP and the Greens was about increasing business trips by rail instead of air, while the postulate from the SVP and the Greens was about reducing business trips.
