Not only Google, but also other providers of artificial intelligence should have to pay copyright fees if they make use of media content. This is the opinion of the responsible National Council committee. (theme picture)

In future, large online services such as Google and X should pay copyright fees when they display extracts from newspaper articles. However, the responsible National Council committee wants to refer the corresponding bill back to the Federal Council and is calling for a regulation for AI.

The national government will therefore probably have to deal with the new ancillary copyright for media and media professionals once again. The National Council's Committee for Transport and Telecommunications (KVF-N) has decided to reject the bill by a clear margin - 18 votes to 3 with 2 abstentions - as reported by the parliamentary services on Tuesday. The final decision will be made by the upper chamber.
The majority of the committee criticized the Federal Council for focusing solely on text and image previews, so-called snippets, and the remuneration for their use in its bill. However, the handling by providers of artificial intelligence (AI) should also be regulated.
