The parliamentary bill for state aid to the ailing Swiss steel industry has cleared another hurdle: The Council of States has agreed to the corresponding law.

By 24 votes to 17 with one abstention, the Council decided on Monday afternoon to approve amendments to the Electricity Supply Act. The detailed discussion then began. The National Council approved the bill last week.

The preliminary consultation committee of the Council of States had previously tightened up this National Council bill in the past few days. This means that the companies that are to receive aid are to meet stricter conditions for this aid. The cantons should also make their contribution.

Four companies are to benefit from the aid, as was announced in the Council of States on Monday: Steeltec in Emmenbrücke LU, Stahl Gerlafingen SO and the aluminum foundries Constellium and Novelis in Sierre VS. They will have to pay lower grid usage fees for electricity for four years.
