More money for agriculture and the Toxinfo poison hotline, less money for federal employees and the abolition of subsidies for night trains: The responsible Council of States committee has presented its proposals for the 2026 federal budget. The Councillors will decide.

Compared to the Federal Council's proposal, the Finance Committee of the Council of States (FK-S) wants to reduce expenditure by a good CHF 14 million and generate additional revenue of almost CHF 27 million, as announced by the parliamentary services on Wednesday evening. Together with the higher tax revenue from the canton of Geneva, this will increase the scope for fiscal policy action by around CHF 300 million to around CHF 385 million.

"This new situation may initially appear pleasing," writes the FK-S, but it should not obscure the fact that the Confederation will face numerous budgetary challenges in the coming years that have not changed.
