As expected, the package for the medium-term relief of the federal budget is having a difficult time in Parliament. Before the first debate in the Council of States, the responsible committee is proposing that around a quarter of the savings volume be waived.

"We are very pleased with the result", said Jakob Stark (SVP/TG), President of the Finance Committee of the Council of States (FK-S), to the media in Bern on Friday. The volume of relief proposed by the Federal Council was ambitious. The Council of States Committee had accepted 75 to 80 percent of this. "That is considerable and was not expected by everyone."
Specifically, the Council of States Committee wants to reduce the federal budget by CHF 1.792 billion in 2027. The Federal Council wants to save CHF 2.396 billion. The committee also wants to water down the proposal for the following years 2028 and 2029 and is proposing to forego a good fifth of the savings volume.
According to Stark, the majorities in the committee were very close in several cases. The outcome is open.
