The hotel industry should continue to have to pay less VAT than other businesses. The Council of States wants to retain the special rate for accommodation establishments. It has adopted a corresponding motion from the SVP parliamentary group, against the will of the Federal Council.

On Monday, the small chamber said yes to the motion by Esther Friedli (SVP/SG) by 37 votes to 3, with 3 abstentions. The special VAT rate of 3.8 percent has been in place since 1996, while the standard rate is currently 8.1 percent. Now the National Council has the floor.

The special rate was introduced as a temporary measure to support the ailing hotel industry. To date, the special rate has been extended six times, most recently until 2027. The Federal Council would have liked to leave it at that. Tourism has developed positively, it wrote in its negative statement.
