In Switzerland, hopelessly indebted private individuals are to be given a realistic and unique opportunity to free themselves from their mountain of debt. This was decided by Parliament.
The Council of States approved the bill by 32 votes to 7, with two abstentions. The "no" votes came from representatives of the SVP, FDP and center, the abstentions from the SVP group. The National Council approved the bill last winter.
It concerns changes to the Debt Enforcement and Bankruptcy Act (SchKG). Anyone who has a mountain of debt and is unable to reduce it on their own will be given the option of a one-off debt haircut. However, certain conditions must be met for such a restructuring bankruptcy procedure.
The bill now goes back to the National Council.
