The Swiss parliament does not want to implement the tobacco advertising ban initiative word for word. At the second attempt, the National Council has approved an implementation law that strives for a middle ground between a very liberal stance and a total ban on advertising.

On Thursday, the large chamber approved the corresponding partial revision of the Tobacco Products Act in the overall vote - by 145 votes to 32 with 17 abstentions. The bill is intended to implement the popular initiative "Children and young people without tobacco advertising", which was approved by the people and cantons in February 2022.

After voting no to the bill a year ago, the wind has changed in the National Council. A majority of the responsible Committee for Social Security and Health (SGK-N) tabled compromise proposals on several points in the run-up to the new debate, which were ultimately passed by the Council.

The bill will now go back to the Council of States.
