Bischof was elected by the voters of Ausserrhoden on March 8 to succeed David Zuberbühler, who stepped down last December. This means that the canton's only seat in the National Council remains in the hands of the SVP.
The 58-year-old entrepreneur Bischof from Teufen AR was a member of the cantonal council for 16 years and headed the cantonal SVP between 2007 and 2015. He presides over the Appenzell Ausserrhoden Homeowners' Association.
Bischof has already stood once as a candidate for the National Council. In 2015, however, he was defeated within the party by David Zuberbühler, who stepped down after ten years in the National Council.
